I am interested in medical transcriptionist training because I need a new career. I was forced to resign from my job as an L.P.N., 1 1/2 years ago because of degenerative disc disease. I became unable to do the lifting, standing and walking, etc. the job required. I have known a few people who have worked at home as a MT, and they found it rewarding work. Also the average salaries for medical transcription are great. I love the idea that I may have the opportunity to work at home which would give me more time with my family. Also, I am no longer able to withstand the physical endurance of holding down a full time job. My husband is medically ill, and on disability-to find a career I could manage from my home would be a god-send. I have a medical background. I worked as a LPN for 28 years in a hospital setting. My job included a variety of things-I am knowledgeable in medical terminology, procedures, tests, and medications. I have done medical secretary duties as well. I worked with computers to do my job. I have a background in keypunch/data entry, as well. I desperately need a career which will support me and my husband. I have been out of work for 1 year. We are struggling just to survive. I have checked into medical transcriptionist schools before, but never pursued anything, other than a little info. What I have read about this career interests me and always has. This sounds like a career I would very much enjoy, and find that I could be excellent at it. I spend a lot of time at the computer thru the day, writing, reading typing letters, and e-mails. This is one thing I can do physically, and without suffering pain and numbness associated with my physical problem. I decided to work on forwarding my education-thru on-line classes. My hopes of finishing RN school are out of reach now, so I need another career choice in a field I am familiar with. I explored trying to finish my 2 year college degree, but right now financially, I am unable to do so. Obtaining MT training and degree (if offered) would be the answer to my prayers-as a new career and for the financial reasons-both of which I need very much. I am used to working hard all my life, not quitting anything I start, and working the hardest I can to improve myself, and do a good job for anyone I have ever worked for. This is the perfect solution for me to be able to get back to work at something I will be good at and that is not too physically demanding. I am very interested in a MT degree. I need employment as soon as I can get it. This type of career seems perfect to me and I am so excited about the possibility of actually getting into this school. Here’s the thing, with medical transcription you can live in California and work for a company in Florida. This is the beauty of MT. Some people live in very depressed areas or rural areas and there are no jobs locally. Since MT is done on the Internet where you live is not a concern at all. However, to answer your question, if you want to solicit your own accounts, you would send out mailers and follow up w/ calls and visits. Medical transcribers need to be proficient in medical terminology, so I think you need to find yourself a dictionary and start making good use of it. You will most likely be using a computer, so that aspect should be fine for you.

when i started my home-based medical transcription business i did a mail out to all the doctors in my local area … i did spend close to four hundred dollars on the flyers and postage but i got my first clients that way … i did a flyer describing my services and prices …i started by charging less than the going rate and offering 10% off for a new client’s first job … i also included in the flyer a label with my companies name and contact info so the office could stick it somewhere in case they needed my services …. around christmas time, namely the beginning of september i place ads on craigslist telling doctors they should give their secretaries the gift of not having to to the transcription for a month … i offer a flat rate and every christmas i get at least one new client and many then call me for when their secretaries go on vacation or if the office becomes back-logged …. and now ten years later i have so much work i subcontract it out and still make money … you have to know what you want and be firm with the doctors or they will walk all over you …

Of course, anything online will be a scam for this.
But.. I have a friend that does this from home.
She worked with a doctor for about three months, then proved she could work from home.
She visits every morning, brings home work, and delivers it in the afternoon.
Be careful online – ok? Especially Craigslist since it’s full of scams…
