I have been a medical biller for over 10yrs. I hope the school that to went to trained you well. I have worked with interns for medical billing during their (forgot what its called) intership (the work hours they need for getting their certificate) and they did not know S**T! Unfortunatley most private practice drs only what to hire people with experince. They don't have the time to train anybody because normally in a small pratice their is only one biller and their is nobody to turn too if you have a question. My best suggestion is for you to look at hospital, large clinics or some medical facility that has mulitple biller/collectors on staff. This way they have the man power to train somebody from scratch.

I graduated in July with my medical transcription certificate, and I too have been having trouble getting hired because of no experience or no openings period. My thing is, how are we supposed to gain experience if no one hires us? And the state of the economy right now doesn't help; lots of people are having trouble finding work where I live. I think there's even a hiring freeze right now. *sigh* I don't know about you, but I don't have the transportation to travel to another area, where I'm sure I can get a job. But if you can, try that. Search the boundaries and areas outside where you live, however far you'll be willing to travel. Make sure you go to all the doctors offices you can, along with clinics and the hospital. Like someone else said, we may have to just wait a little longer for things to pick up. And don't be afraid or too proud to take another job outside of transcribing (like receptionist at the front desk of a doc's office, or another position at the hospital that you qualify for, any type of secretarial work, etc.) just to get your foot in the door and have a paycheck in the meantime. I've been looking for all of that and still haven't found a job.

Here's a site you can check each day for job openings:

It depends where you graduated from.. if it was a place like Sanford Brown 'College' don't plan on ever getting hired because those places have HORRIBLE reputation with doctors office's and Hospitals.. The economy is so bad that there are people with Master's Degrees applying for jobs and they cant even get a call back for an entry level position.. just try your best to constantly apply all over the place.. maybe revamp your resume and wait out the economy crash

Nearly this exact question was asked 22 hours ago. Here was my answer then:

Coders will still be needed to review what the doctor enters, to code surgeries, to deal with insurance companies, to set policies, to set reimbursements, etc.

However, the market is flooded because it's a cheap quick degree.

------------------
One of the things with coding and billing is that to be a really good one, you have to have attention to detail and to be willing to do your research. That you couldn't even scroll through 4 pages or 24 hours of answers does not make you seem like you have that drive to learn. Cookie cutter coders and billers are a dime a dozen. Physicians want coders who can think outside of the box.

Here are a couple more things to consider:

Medical coding pay more than medical transcription.

The possibilities of working from home are higher for experienced transcriptionists than for medical coders. The majority of experienced medical transcriptionists work from home. Some medical coders do but not many and it is usually after they have worked for their employer for a few years first.

I've been in the field over 20 years. There's an online guide to choosing a course of study on the website below, including the right questions to ask before you invest. Know the difference between getting a certificate and being "certified". Big difference.

You should check with your local community colleges to see if they offer certificates for medical transcription.
